Writer/director Sarah Polley’s new movie Stories We Tell is a genre-twisting documentary that delves deep into her own family’s history. She takes aim at the secrets buried by her family by examining their collective memories and individual perspectives. Setting out ostensibly to make a documentary about her mother, the actress Diane Polley, who died in 1990 when Sarah was only 11, the film’s scope widens to look at long-term relationships and the power of stories.
